GREYHOUND REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY AT MANCHESTER'S STADIUM OF DEATH

Belle Vue Stadium - This Sunday, November 16th, 12 noon

45 greyhounds killed and sent to university for "research"
Just last Thursday - another dog seriously injured and "put down" at track

Under the Freedom of Information Act, greyhound protection campaigners have obtained details of dozens of greyhounds that have been put to death, sometimes after serious injury, at Manchester's Belle Vue Stadium, within the past 15 months.

The information was obtained from Liverpool University, after the Sunday Times exposed a greyhound breeder selling the bodies of pups that wouldnt chase, or were too slow, to the university for research and dissection (see http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/u ... 908388.ece)

It reveals that, within a 13 month period, the university also received the corpses of 45
greyhounds that had been "put down" at Belle Vue Stadium, following injury or at the racing owner's request.

In September 2006, the Sunday Times published an article about dogs from Belle Vue and other tracks being put to death at a so-called "animal sanctuary" at Leigh, just 15 miles from Manchester (see
http://www.greyhoundgap.org.uk/newsdetail.php?ne_id=4 for text of article).

At http://www.dogmagazine.net/archives/1086/shock ... live-on-tv there is an article about a recent fatal injury to a greyhound at the track.

And, within the past few days, we have received information about another dog, called Emerson Catkin, who was "put down" after she was seriously injured in a race at Belle Vue last Thursday.

In memory of all these dogs, and of the many thousands of others that have suffered and died over the years, because of the existence of the Belle Vue track, there will be a remembrance ceremony outside the stadium, starting at 12 noon this Sunday, November 16th.

Please do your utmost to attend this very important event. It is hoped to achieve widespread media coverage, in order to further educate the public to boycott greyhound racing, and the bigger the attendance, the larger that coverage is likely to be.

Rescued greyhounds and other dogs are very welcome at the ceremony and their presence will definitely increase media interest in the event. So, if you have dogs of a suitable disposition, please do bring them along.

Although the ceremony will be of a quiet and solemn nature, it is very important that it is visual, so, if possible, please bring anti-greyhound racing banners and placards.

There will be a minute's silence for all the greyhounds that have suffered and died, followed by the laying of wreaths and flowers (do bring your own along) at the entrance to the stadium.

Directions to the stadium, together with a map, can be found at

In addition to this important remembrance event, Greyhound Action Manchester hold regular demos/leafletting outside Belle Vue (usually on Saturday evenings, but sometimes weeknights too) to coincide with dog racing taking place there.

They urgently need more volunteers to assist them, so if you can get along to help, even if only occasionally, please contact Greyhound Action Manchester at greyhoundactionmanchester@hotmail.com

Photos of previous demos at Belle Vue can be seen at http://tinyurl.com/Belle-Vue-08-05-17 and http://tinyurl.com/BelleVueDemo
