Erstaunlich daß die Leute sich das gefallen lassen- Diktatur hin oder her, 50 000 Leute kann man nicht einfach in Lagern verschwinden lassen:
Yunnan dog cull almost complete
Shanghei Daily, Winny Wang 2006-08-01
MOUDING County, in Yunnan Province, has slaughtered almost all of its pet dogs and watchdogs -- totaling 54,429 -- in an effort to fight against the spread of rabies, Yunnan Daily reported today.
Only military dogs guarding an ammunition warehouse and police dogs were permitted to survive.
The Yunnan government has sent more than 200,000 vaccines to Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, where the county is located, and checked 116,000 pets in the area to ensure they don't have rabies.
In the 10 counties and cities in the prefecture, pet dogs are not allowed to roam outside and all dog trading markets have been shut down.
The local government has promoted knowledge about the prevention and treatment of the rabies disease.
An expert group has been sent to the area to help handle the epidemic disease and to study its epidemiology.
The campaign was touched off by reports that said at least three people had died recently in Mouding County from rabies and many others had been bitten.
On Saturday, officials said that 90 percent of the dogs in Mouding had been killed, and they expected to finish the undertaking on Sunday.
This year, 360 of the county's 200,000 people reportedly suffered from dog bites. Five were hospitalized since July 20 alone.
Since April, three people died of rabies in the county, one a 4-year-old girl.
Two cows and three pigs were also found dead after they were attacked by dogs.
Health authorities began to vaccinate the county's canines, but as the dog attacks increased, government officials decided they needed to take a more drastic action.
A local veterinary authority official surnamed Liang explained that only 85 percent of the vaccinations would actually be effective.
"With the aim to keep this horrible disease from harming humans, we decided to kill the dogs," Xinhua news agency quoted Li Haibo, spokesman for the county government, as saying.
